How many hours of video fit in 1 TB?

1 TB holds about 45 to 90 hours of 1080p, 11 to 22 hours of camera 4K, 4.5 hours of ProRes 422 and 2 to 3 hours of ProRes 422 HQ. One table for every common format, the real capacity of a '1 TB' SSD, and how to plan a year of shoots.

Short answer: 1 TB holds about 45 to 90 hours of 1080p H.264, 11 to 22 hours of 4K H.264 from a mirrorless camera, 22 to 37 hours of 4K H.265, about 4.5 hours of ProRes 422 and only 2 to 3 hours of ProRes 422 HQ at 4K. Those figures use 1 TB as 1,000 GB; a “1 TB” SSD formats to about 930 GB, so real capacity is 7 percent lower.

How do you work it out?

Every answer comes from the bitrate. Divide megabits per second by 8 for megabytes per second, multiply by 60 for a minute and by 60 again for an hour, then divide 1,000 GB by the hourly figure.

For 4K H.264 at 150 Mbps:

The bitrate depends on the codec and the mode you chose in the camera, not on the resolution alone. 4K in H.265 can be smaller than 1080p in ProRes.

An iPhone in its default 4K HEVC mode writes roughly 50 to 90 Mbps depending on frame rate, so 1 TB holds around 25 to 40 hours of phone footage.

Why is a “1 TB” SSD only 930 GB?

Drive makers count in decimal, so 1 TB means 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and macOS reports in decimal too. But the filesystem reserves a few percent for its own structures, and an APFS volume with snapshots and metadata loses more. In practice a 1 TB SSD gives about 930 GB you can fill, and the last 5 to 10 percent should stay free or the drive slows down.

On a MacBook the usable footage space is smaller still. macOS, apps and caches take 100 to 150 GB, so a 1 TB MacBook has about 850 GB for everything else.

How much do you need for a year of shoots?

Take the hourly figure for your format, multiply by the hours you record a month, then add 30 to 50 percent for project files, caches, proxies and exports. Three examples at 4K H.264 around 150 Mbps, or 67 GB per hour:

None of those fits on the Mac. A 2 TB external SSD in India costs ₹12,000 to ₹18,000, so the creator buys two or three a year and the documentary crew three or four, with no second copy unless they buy the drives twice. The per-codec breakdown is in how much storage one hour of 4K takes.

Does the answer change with a streaming drive?

The hours per TB do not change. What changes is that the TB no longer has to be attached to the Mac. A streaming cloud drive shows the whole library in Finder at its real size, takes 0 KB on the Mac’s SSD, and fetches only the frames you play, so a 512 GB MacBook can open all of it.
